Process of hair transplant

Process of hair transplant during which follicles from the donor area (area with a good amount of hair) are extracted and are implanted in the area with lesser hair i.e. recipient area. There are 2 types of hair on the head.

1.      Temporary hair

2.      Permanent hair

Temporary hairs are located on the top front of the head. They shed because of male hormones, genetics, pollution, or other factors like the use of drugs, certain medications, etc.

Hairs on the back of the head are permanent and are not affected by DHT Dihydrotestosterone.

During the hair restoration process, follicles are often extracted from the permanent hair zone i.e. back of the head, and are implanted in the recipient area. This procedure can be done either through FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) or FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). FUE is the individual extraction of follicles directly from the scalp. FUT, also known as Strip Procedure, is the extraction of grafts (a bunch of follicles) in a strip and then dividing the strip into small fragments or slivers. Both procedures are done under local anesthesia and hence the patient feels no pain.

How long does a hair transplant procedure take?

This procedure typically takes 6-10 hours to complete. However, it chiefly depends on the number of grafts being transplanted. For example, if the number of grafts is 1500 then it would take probably 6-7 hours and if grafts are more, say, 2500 then it would take 8-10 hours approximately. You’re allowed to watch TV or use a cell phone and can even call someone during the procedure. You can also take a lunch break or short break for your comfort.

Is it painful to have a hair transplant?

As both procedures (FUT/ FUE) in this surgery are performed under local anesthesia, therefore, you won’t feel any pain. However, just like other surgeries, it can cause a little discomfort but that’s not a big deal. Don’t worry, Hair Relocation is an easy experience.

Is hair transplant permanent?

The hair restoration process is long-lasting and is considered permanent. If the patient’s hairs are implanted from the back of the head (permanent donor zone) then there would not be hair loss as these hairs are healthy and aren’t affected by DHT. And if the patient is facing hair fall even after the surgery, then it might be because of several factors like; patient’s lifestyle, a diet deficiency, mishandling of follicles by the surgeon, etc. Hence, make sure to take proper care of your hair post-surgery and must choose an experienced surgeon.

What is the success rate of a hair transplant?

There is no wonder that these transplants are becoming increasingly common everywhere as their success rate is quite good. According to a study, 20% of people relish prosperous hair restoration for more than 20 years. 55% of people’s surgery lasts for 10 or more years while 25% of people face surgery that lasts for 5 years.

Selection of a well-skilled surgeon and post-surgery care are the factors that play a significant role in making the surgery successful.

What is the best time for a hair transplant?

Many people claim the 30s to be the best time to get you a baldness treatment procedure whereas others affirm the 20s to be the best age for a transplant. Technically, there is no best time. You need to determine the cause of your hair loss that either it is temporary alopecia or pattern baldness. Whatever may be the cause, you must wait for your baldness to stabilize to cover all affected areas effectively. Consult with your doctor. He will thoroughly examine the patient’s scalp, history, causes for alopecia and then will guide you the best.

Why do hair transplants fail?

As the results of transplant surgery vary widely, there are multiple reasons for its failure ;

Ø  The patient might not be the ideal candidate i.e. no sufficient donor area, too young, or unstable hair loss.

Ø  Inexperienced surgeon

Ø  No post-surgery care

Ø  Mishandling graft during the surgery (graft implantation time should be fast within 3 hours. After 3 hours, the survival rate of graft starts decreasing.)

Ø  Poor Technique(not considering hair loss type, stage, and pattern)

Ø  Unequipped Operation Theatre

The results of a hair regrowth procedure are shown usually in six to twelve months. So be patient and hope for the best.
